Hi! I am Suruchi, a dreamer, a thinker and a painter. I paint what touches my heart and fascinates the mind.

Early years

I was born in Amravati and brought up in Nagpur, India. I lived in a home surrounded by nature and a big family. As a child I was happy doodling and playing with paints for hours together.

In school apart from sports and languages I excelled in art, winning all competitions and prizes. I excelled in expressing creatively.

The years of formal training

Since I was 10 years old I had a dream of studying art at Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai (then Bombay). I gave the entrance exam along with thousands others for pursuing my dream, and cleared in the first attempt at the age of 16 years.

Thus as a happy teenager I started my adventure and training in the field of Fine Arts. The lessons learnt were enthralling, I found myself learning from the pages of history of art as well as from the teachings of the professors at school. Evenings were spent sketching and completing assignments, or reading books borrowed from the BCL (British Council Library).

My Style

In my 4th year of B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Arts) I started painting my own subject i.e. ‘Ants’. I found inspiration in their boundless energy and the motive of carrying on against all adversities.

After creating a 100+ works on ants I moved to a broader subject which has been a source of inspiration for all humanity- Nature.

One subject gave away to another and my creative journey progressed, helped by my travels, experiences, I painted incessantly the following;

Himalayas, monks, prayer flags, self portraits, starlit skies, girl in the world of pots, dancing figures, ancient sculptures and designs. My ‘woman with a turban’ has become an iconic and signature style.

After completing B.F.A. I returned home to Nagpur, where I pursued M.F.A. at Lalit Kala Vibhag of Nagpur University.

I take pleasure in showing my works, I find it completes the circle of creativity. I had my first solo show in 2000 in Kala Ghoda, Mumbai , when I was still at college. I have been showing regularly ever since.

I also;

  • Learnt pottery at Gramoday Sangh Bhadravati
  • Worked at ceramics studio at Bharat Bhavan Bhopal
  • Learnt Fresco at Vanasthali University, Jaipur
  • Learnt to make hand made paper at Indus Paper Boards, Nagpur
  • Travelled twice to Europe, studying the masters

I got married to my boyfriend and soulmate in 2003. As he is a fighter pilot with the Indian Air Force, we keep moving base every few years, thus I get to explore my roots and country, getting mesmerized and inspired to create. We have two beautiful daughters, who doodle and paint alongside me.

The woman with a turban

The turban symbolizes leadership, a strong and decisive mind in a thinking mode.

I lived in Rajasthan, where all men wear colourful turbans. In my art thus emerged the form of a strong woman who makes her own choices, sticks to her decisions and takes on all the challenges life throws at her. The woman with a turban accompanied with her jewels and pearls symbolizes the beauty and strength of today’s woman.

Having had numerous solo shows, my works have found their way into hundreds of collections, private and public. This enthralling journey on canvas continues for me.
